The appearance of the MetaMask crypto wallet.

MetaMask Wallet is a non-custodial crypto wallet where users independently manage their cryptocurrency and store their own seed phrase. With it, you can receive, send, and store your crypto assets, as well as use various dApps such as betting platforms, NFT marketplaces, and much more.

MetaMask Wallet supports Ethereum and Ethereum-compatible networks (EVM). However, it does not support other popular networks such as Bitcoin, Tron, Solana, Cardano, Avalanche, Terra, and others.

The MetaMask crypto wallet app is available in 15 languages, and its interface is designed to be intuitive and accessible—though inexperienced users may still find it somewhat challenging to navigate.

Benefits

Support for Multiple Tokens and Networks

The first thing I like is the app’s interface. It’s designed to make cryptocurrency management simple and accessible. Although MetaMask is initially targeted at a more advanced audience, I noticed that the structured menu and visual controls significantly ease navigation for beginners.

Support for Decentralized Applications (dApps)

It’s worth highlighting the support for Ethereum-based decentralized applications. I can easily interact with apps such as decentralized exchanges, blockchain games, lending platforms, and other Web3 projects. Integration with Ethereum-based dApps opens up investment opportunities for me.

Account and Cryptocurrency Management

MetaMask allows users to create and manage multiple accounts within a single app. This is especially convenient for those who want to separate their investments or follow different asset management strategies. Additionally, support for multiple cryptocurrencies enables users to store and exchange not only Ethereum but also numerous other tokens. This gives users greater flexibility in managing their assets.

Drawbacks

Support

This is where I encountered disappointment. All assistance and responses to questions are handled exclusively by artificial intelligence. If you run into issues or errors, getting a competent answer or real-time support is simply impossible. This can worsen the situation when a quick response is needed.

Reputation

MetaMask’s reputation raises doubts for me. In 2023, the company faced a serious issue: due to an unknown exploit, users lost over $10 million. Hackers leveraged vulnerabilities in the system, targeting specific addresses, and the developers failed to pinpoint the exact causes—which, in my opinion, negatively impacted MetaMask’s reputation.

Choosing the Right Cryptocurrency

I ran into difficulties selecting tokens and networks due to the interface’s simplicity and minimalism. Instead of familiar names, tokens and networks are displayed as small icons, which can be confusing. Without knowing what these symbols represent, it’s very easy to choose the wrong cryptocurrency or network!

Number of Blockchains and Cryptocurrencies

The MetaMask crypto wallet was designed for the Ethereum ecosystem, so it supports only EVM-compatible networks. Many popular networks—such as Bitcoin, Tron, Solana, Cardano, Avalanche, Terra, and others—are simply not supported, and this becomes a problem for me. As a result, I need to install at least one additional alternative app to work with these networks. This really calls into question the wallet’s universality.

Conclusions

Based on my personal experience using various non-custodial crypto wallets, I’ve come to the conclusion that while MetaMask may suit advanced users, it raises considerable doubts. Although the app allows you to work with Ethereum and Ethereum-compatible networks (EVM), its functionality leaves much to be desired, as MetaMask does not support many popular networks such as Bitcoin, Tron, Solana, and others.

The 2023 scandal, in which over $10 million was stolen from users, has only heightened my concerns. Victims never recovered their funds, and the security of using the MetaMask app raises serious questions.

So, even if you work with Ethereum and are prepared to handle potential issues on your own without assistance from customer support (which the company simply doesn’t have), it’s worth asking yourself: do you really want an app on your smartphone that has been the target of such a significant data breach and theft of funds?
